Dune damage clampdown continues
Illegal activities in the Admiralty Reserve are being investigated.
LOCAL, national and provincial authorities are investigating the clearing of a large swathe of dune vegetation in front of No 5 Beach Road, Marina Beach.
Hibiscus Coast Municipality spokesman Simon April said the municipal environmental department had been on site and had carried out an inspection of the damaged area.
Officials had then reported the matter to both the provincial and national departments of environmental affairs.
“The contractor on site was instructed to cease any further clearing of Admiralty Reserve in front of this property. An investigation is under way,” Mr April said.
Recently, environmental agencies have been clamping down on dune clearing and other illegal activities in the Admiralty Reserve.
In October last year, the National Department of Environmental Affairs, in co-operation with Hibiscus Coast Municipality, served notices to 28 Shelly Beach property owners for allegedly extending their properties into or building illegal structures in the Admiralty Reserve.
Mr April said more notices had been served last month.
The authorities had received rehabilitation plans from some of the transgressors who were making efforts to rectify the non-compliance with environmental legislation.
The National Department of Environmental Affairs would issue compliance notices to the property owners who had not responded or had not yet proved they were not responsible for the Admiralty Reserve legislation infringements.
This matter had not yet been finalised, Mr April said.
