MALANGENI resident Sbongile Shezi (45) was rushed to the GJ Crookes Hospital in Scottburgh shortly after being shot.
Ms Shezi had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to her head and neck, as well as a fractured leg and open wounds on her head.
Her husband-to-be, 51-year-old former regent-chief of Malangeni, Sbusiso Shozi, was arrested at the scene.
He has been charged with attempted murder.
Scottburgh SAPS communications officer Vincent Pandarum said that the motive for the shooting is yet to be established.
Police have sent a 9mm pistol, bullet heads, spent cartridges and a bush knife to the forensic science laboratory for analysis.
Shozi allegedly gained entry into the property by breaking a window.
He then opened fire, hitting Ms Shezi three times. He then struck her multiple times on the head with the bush knife.
The case was postponed to today (July 21) for a bail application.
Ms Shezi was transferred to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital in Durban, where she is fighting for her life.
The case is being investigated by Detective Warrant Officer Brian Khoza of the Umzinto SAPS Detective Service.
