Emotional farewell to ‘Hibiscus Coast’ Municipality
Tuesday marked the end of the road as councillors for some.
AS from next Wednesday, ‘Hibiscus Coast Municipality’ will be no more and we will usher in Ray Nkonyeni Municipality.
Tuesday’s council meeting was an emotional occasion as it marked the last time the current sitting council would attend a meeting together.
Some old faces will remain after August 3, but there is bound to be new blood as well.
Hibiscus Coast mayor Councillor Cynthia Mqwebu officially closed council business for the term as councillors bade farewell to each other in what they described as an ’emotional journey’.
For those coming back, a new journey awaits as the new municipality will be called ‘Ray Nkonyeni’ in the new term, with six more wards added.
During the meeting Cllr Mqwebu thanked all councillors for their efforts and commended some for their hard work and leading selflessly in their communities.
“This feels like I’m saying goodbye to my own children. I’m a mother and I know what it feels like to say goodbye to your family.”
Although some councillors were uncertain about what the future holds for them beyond the elections, they said they would still be involved with politics.
It doesn’t matter what happens after elections, I will still serve my community, – Robert Khowa.
More than 25 accolades that were achieved by the municipality, since the beginning of this final term, were displayed at the council chambers.
All councillors were awarded certificates of appreciation from the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
