Water leak testing rig launched

The new control room will assist in detecting leaks faster.

AFRICA’S very first leak test rig will be put into operation at Ugu, said Ugu mayor, Councillor Ntombifikile Gumede, at the launch of the Ugu leak detection testing rig control room, held at Marburg last Friday.

According to Cllr Gumede, the aim of the rig was to detect the status of water losses within the municipality as part of the ‘No Drop’ initiative by the Department of Water and Sanitation.

She added that this was another initiative to improve systems and ensure water loss reduction.

In her speech, she said various techniques had been employed recently, including:

* Installation of 204 pressure reducing valves;

* Installation of 175 bulk meters;

* Replacement of 50km of water pipelines.

This progress does not in any way mean that we have won the war against leaks; we have only just tapped the surface, more still needs to be done but surely we can say today is better than yesterday and tomorrow will be better than today, – Cllr Gumede.

Angela Masefield from the Department of Water and Sanitation said they were excited to be part of such a programme. “I’m sure we are all aware of water demands and we can’t afford to lose water through leaks.”

She also encouraged other municipalities to draw inspiration from this initiative.
