Fleeing car thief breaks a leg
The stolen vehicle was found parked near a tavern.
TWO car thieves were arrested for stealing a vehicle in the Mehlomnyama area on Monday this week.
A light duty vehicle with a canopy was reported stolen after a break-in at a plant hire premises in Izotsha last Friday. A laptop was also stolen from the premises.
A tracking company had traced the signal of the stolen vehicle to Mehlomnyama and Port Shepstone police were asked to assist.
Constables Orlando Nyawose and Oscar Msomi, both stationed at the Port Shepstone K9 unit rushed to the Mabaleni area where they found the stolen vehicle parked near a tavern. There were two men inside the vehicle.
Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said when the men saw the police, they leapt from the vehicle and scaled a high wall in an attempt to escape.
One of the men broke his leg, and both were arrested. The stolen computer and a brushcutter were found in the vehicle.
The suspects, both in their 20s, will be charged with the possession of a stolen vehicle and stolen property and will appear in court soon.
“One is in custody while the other is under police guard in hospital,” said Lt-Col Wiid.
