Sex scandal teacher suspended
Teachers are urged to behave professionally towards pupils.
TEACHERS have been warned to stop engaging in sexual relations with pupils and to focus on what they were hired to do – educate.
The Department of Education has widely criticised such acts, calling them unlawful and criminal.
KZN education MEC, Mthandeni Dlungwana, said teachers are expected to play a parental role at schools, not to see pupils as partners from whom they can extort sex.
Two months ago, the Herald reported the case of a teacher at Mbambi High in Gcilima who was allegedly caught with his pants down, extorting sex from a grade 10 pupil in the school’s toilets.
The department’s spokesman, Muzi Mahlambi, said the teacher is currently facing disciplinary action.
“The teacher was suspended and harsh action will be taken against him pending the case.”
Mr Dlungwana also said those found in relationships with pupils will face the full might of the law.
“We challenge all teachers in the province to be enthusiastic and driven by the need to see their pupils prosper.”
