Crime down in Uvongo
About 60 percent of housebreaking occurred during the day, spiking over weekends and particularly on Saturdays.
GOOD news for Uvongo residents is that housebreaking incidents are starting to decrease in this area.
Uvongo Community Safety Forum members were concerned at the beginning of July when it looked as if housebreaking statistics would be higher than during previous months.
By the end of the July, they were pleasantly surprised to note that the monthly total for these crimes had actually declined.
About 60 percent of housebreaking occurred during the day, spiking over weekends and particularly on Saturdays. For some reason, there were no break-ins reported on Wednesdays and Fridays.
The Block Watch will be particularly vigilant on Saturdays this month.
Sector Two, which includes Riviera Crescent, Nice Road, Grindewald Drive and Garden Terrace proved a crime hot spot last month with 47 percent of the total housebreaking incidents occurring there.
At forum meetings, members have expressed concern about certain informal car guards in the town who are suspected of being involved in criminal activities like drug peddling and housebreaking.
Gert Ludge represented the forum at a meeting between the SAPS and the Car Guard Association. Steps are to be taken to address the problem. All car guards will have to be registered within the next two months after which non-registered car guards will be arrested.
