A CASE of attempted murder has been opened after shots rang out at Ward 5 ANC councillor Phumlani Gumbi’s home in Gamalakhe in the early hours of Monday morning.
Cllr Gumbi, popularly known as ‘Duvet’, a character he plays in a locally produced movie, was sleep when the incident occurred.
“At around 2am, I heard gunshots. The assailant shot at the window near where my daughter had been up studying for a test.”
No one was injured. Cllr Gumbi disputed allegations that the shooting was politically motivated.
“A few months ago, while I was away in Durban, someone tried to break into my house, and also vandalised my windows,” he said.
Margate police spokesman, Captain Gerald Mfeka confirmed the incident. He said Gamalakhe police were investigating and no arrests had been made so far.
ANC regional spokesman, Sipho Dlamalala said they were deeply concerned about the number of shooting incidents directed at ANC councillors.
“At this stage we can’t say whether the shooting was politically motivated or not. We are awaiting the outcome of the police investigation.”
Mr Dlamalala urged people with information to come forward.
