Municipal inaugurations begin – who’s in and who’s out?

Mayors, councillors and executive members will be sworn in.

LOCAL government elections have come and gone, and municipalities are now gearing up for their long-awaited series of inauguration ceremonies.

Newly elected leadership, including ward councillors, PR councillors, the top three – mayors, deputy mayors and speakers – will be sworn in during these ceremonies.

These officials will serve their communities and council for the next five years.

First up was Ray Nkonyeni Municipality which is the new name for the amalgamated Hibiscus Coast Municipality/Ezinqoleni Municipality, where councillors were inaugurated yesterday (Thursday).

Nomusa Mqwebu retains the mayorship of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, while former Hibiscus Coast Speaker, Ronnie Nair has been appointed as deputy mayor.

Former HCM Exco member Doctor Njoko was named as the new Speaker.

The council consists of 10 members – seven from the ANC; two from the DA and one from the EFF.

Other municipal inauguration ceremonies take place as follows:

* Umuziwabantu Municipality at Harding Town Hall today, August 19 at 10am;

* Umzumbe Municipality at Ntelezi Msane Heritage Centre on Monday, August 22 at 10am;

* Ugu District Municipality at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre on Wednesday, August 24 at 10am.
