Work resumes on Mzimkhulu River bridge
A stakeholders' engagement meeting will be held at Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Council Chambers this morning.
After repeated stoppages, work on the Mzimkhuku River bridge has finally resumed after contractors Yena Uyabusa Trading and Naidoo Consulting received payment.
More details on the work under way will be provided at a stakeholders’ engagement meeting at Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Council Chambers this Friday (26th) at 10:00.
The meeting will be chaired by Muziwakhe Sithole, the Chief Director of Transport Infrastructure and District Services eThekwini Region.
ANC Veterans’ League spokesperson for the Tolomane Mnyayiza Region, Selvan Chetty, confirmed that construction workers are on site.
Chetty had written to President Cyril Ramaphosa about the bridge and the R102, between Port Shepstone and Umtentweni.
In his submission, Chetty had stated the South Coast community was in dire straits due to the project having stalled.
“Businesses has been severely impacted resulting in several small businesses closing doors and larger ones having to retrench or reduce staff hours. As a member of the community and a representative of the ANC Veterans’ League in the region, we appeal to your good offices to consider this matter and help find a solution to our plight. Our people are not asking for much, we are pleading for government representatives and contractors to honour their commitment to serve and treat our people with dignity and respect.”
Chetty added that his letter was acknowledged by the Office of the President and delegated for attention.
In the meantime, maintenance work on the R102 is currently being carried out by the local KZN Department of Transport (DoT), and the contractor, Jamjo Civils, is in negotiations with DoT to resume work on the project.
