Father tracks down thief
The opportunistic thief was unaware that his victim's father is a police officer.
IN the excitement of undergoing her first day of training at the Scottburgh Mall, a young woman (18) was blissfully unaware that her cell phone had fallen from her pocket.
As the day progressed the young woman realised her phone was missing.
Thinking that she must have left it in her dad’s vehicle, she wasn’t too worried. Later in the day, however, the woman’s father contacted one of her co-workers,asking if his daughter had lost her phone.
The phone had picked up by someone who had called the woman’s grandmother and demanded R500 in order to return the phone.
Quickly, the grandmother contacted the woman’s father and alerted him to the situation.
Completely unaware that the woman’s father was a police officer, the thief thought he would soon be rewarded.
The police officer quickly got to work tracking the phone, which was traced to Mtwalume.
While en route to Mtwalume, the officer phoned the thief and said he was on his way with the money and a meeting was set up.
Little did the thief know, the officer already had his location narrowed down.
When he approached, he saw four patrol vans waiting. Instead of handing over the phone and collecting his ‘reward’ he sent a child out to return the phone and fled.
“I feel ecstatic and overjoyed to have my phone back,” said the woman, who added that she will be more careful with her belongings in future.
