Maidens prepare for reed dance

Dressed in colorful traditional regalia, maidens sang and danced in celebration.

MORE 1 000 maidens from within the Ugu district took part in the annual conference last weekend in preparation for the main reed dance which takes place in Zululand in September.

Hosted by the Department of Arts and Culture, the build-up to the event was held in Izingolweni.

It was a day of song and dance as maidens, dressed in colorful traditional attire, welcomed Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini‘s sixth wife, Zola Mafu. She encouraged the maidens to preserve their virginity and said this event would give those unable to attend the main reed dance next month an opportunity to experience what happens at the event.

Department of Arts Ugu district deputy director Nozipho Chiliza said the event was aimed at raising awareness and educating maidens about HIV and Aids as well as other social  ills facing young people today.

Ugu mayor Tolomane Myayiza reminded maidens of the importance of holding on to their traditions and remaining chaste, despite peer pressure.
