SUSPICION and speculation are rife after the death under suspicious circumstances of Albersville resident Dane Nair (26) on June 27.

Some are now suggesting that the young man’s death may have been a ‘hit’.

Mr Nair was found dead in his bakkie, which was parked outside the Port Shepstone police station . There was a T-shirt tied tightly around his neck.

“My brother went to seek help at the police station on the day he dies, and on the previous day,” said Rani Landsberg.

“This case should be a priority for the police because it happened on their doorstep yet we still have no answers.”

It is believed that Mr Nair had gone to the police station on June 26 to report that his life was in danger. His concerns were apparently dismissed.

The family claim to have seen CCTV footage of Dane reporting to the station on that Monday night.

“This clearly shows that my brother was not helped by the two officers at the charge office. Dane paced up and down the office, looking outside all the time. At one point he went to an officer and said something but she never even acknowledged him,” said Mrs Landsberg.

We saw the fear in his eyes. He arrived at 6pm and at about 8pm he tried to leave, but when he saw a car drive into the parking lot, he went back inside. He looked out through the window before going outside again. That was the last time we saw him alive.

According to Ms Landsberg, the injuries on Mr Nair’s body indicated that he had put up a fight.

Police spokesman Captain Vincent Pandarum confirmed last week that no arrests had been made.

The post-mortem  showed that Mr Nair had died from ‘unnatural causes’ and was possibly ‘smothered’.

However, his family claim to have seen a statement filled in by the officer who discovered Mr Nair’s body. It allegedly stated: “The deceased strangled himself. He got a laceration on the lips.”

The Nair family has pleaded for anyone with information to please come forward.

“Help us get closure and bring those responsible for his death to book,” said Mrs Landsberg.
