Canoes stripped…by poachers?
The most logical assumption is that poachers are using the cable for snares.
POACHERS are now feared to be targeting the bush around the Port Shepstone Country Club after canoes were found stripped of steering cables recently.
The club is home to the South Coast canoeing fraternity who are now training daily for various big races, building up to the Dusi.
The boats are stored conveniently at a specially renovated building behind the bowling greens, close to a river launch site.
Top master canoeist Willie Kunz went down for a training session recently only to find his single kayak’s steering mechanism cut and stripped.
The most logical assumption is that poachers are using the cable for snares.
Small buck used to be a common sight on the golf course, especially during the evening when many people walk around the picturesque setting. Although droppings can still be seen on the fairways, it is now rare indeed to see the timid blue and grey duiker.
The club has appealed to anyone who spots any suspicious activity on the course or around the canoe facility to report it to the club manager immediately.
