THE streets of Hibberdene and Mfazazana swarmed with police last Friday when Major-General Agnes Nxamagele, Ugu cluster commander and her officers carried out a successful multi-disciplinary crime prevention operation.
A squad of SAPS officers from the Vehicle Identification Section (VIS), Crime Intelligence detectives, Hibberdene SAPS, Tactical Response Team (TRT), 10111 Flying Squad and the cluster commander’s office were assigned to various teams. These included teams for a roadblock, and for raids for wanted suspects, while the others simultaneously swooped on premises where firearms and drugs were suspected to be.
Officers trekked for kilometres through rugged and undulating terrain in the dark to reach the various premises, including taverns packed with patrons.
Police spokesman, Captain Vincent Pandarum said inspections were carried out to ensure that the liquor outlets were operating in compliance with their liquor licences and patrons were searched for drugs, dangerous weapons and unlicensed firearms.
The operation continued until the early hours of the morning and various arrests were made.
Two people were arrested for dealing in liquor without a licence, five for the possession of dagga, two for the possession of heroin (whoonga capsules), three for offences under the Road Traffic Act, two on warrants of arrest for failing to attend court on housebreaking charges and the arrest of two suspects on the wanted list for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
