Cops put criminals under the cosh
During a cordon and search and roadblock, 102 people, 16 premises and 48 vehicles were searched.
SPECIAL operations carried out by police are producing excellent results.
* Detective Warrant Officer Herman Pienaar from Ugu cluster and his anti- drug team together with the Crime Intelligence unit, acted on information and launched a sting operation in Shelly Beach last Friday. This led to the arrest of two men, both in their 30s, who were in possession of a piece of crack cocaine with a value of R400. Both face a charge of dealing in drugs and will appear in court soon.
* Last Friday a special operation involving members of the Ugu cluster office, K9 unit, TRT unit, Southport police, VIS and RTI, was held in the Southport policing area. Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid, said that during the cordon and search and roadblock, 102 people, 16 premises and 48 vehicles were searched.
Police arrested eight people for being in possession of dagga, one person for the possession of a dangerous weapon, four for being drunk in public, one for a road traffic offence and one for being an illegal immigrant.
Brigadier Bongani Sibiya, deputy cluster commander of the Ugu cluster, who was overall in charge of the operation expressed his satisfaction with the operation, especially in view of the fact that the Southport area showed a very low crime figure over the weekend.
* On Thursday, Southport police were conducting stop and search operations in the Sea Park area when they were directed to a compound. There they found a man with several cellphones in his possession. Lt-Col said that when he was asked to produce proof of ownership of the cellphones, he told police he was repairing them for other people, but could not produce any receipts.
“At the time he was sitting on his bed and when police asked him to stand up, he hesitated and became aggressive,” she said.
It was then discovered that he was concealing a laptop beneath him. He could not produce a receipt for the laptop.
The man, a foreigner, could also not produce documentation showing that he was lawfully in the country.
He was arrested and detained.
