Berea Road residents going potty

Numerous attempts by residents to have their street repaired have proved fruitless.

RESIDENTS are fed up with Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s apparent lack of attention to service delivery, particularly in Berea Road and Jan Smuts Avenue, Port Shepstone.

Several disgruntled residents have complained about the debris of a collapsed wall in Berea Road, situated just metres from the CBD.

It is not only an eyesore, but a danger to pedestrians and motorists travelling on the road.

There is no warning tape and soon someone is going to slam into this rubble, – resident.

“The road conditions are appalling and attempts to get the municipality to tidy up and repair both Berea Road and Jan Smuts have fallen on deaf ears,” said another resident.

The Herald visited the area and found that the road had deteriorated and that it compromises the safety of both pedestrians and motorists.

Motorists have to come to a stop on Jan Smuts Avenue near the entrance to the Port Shepstone Mortuary and the road is riddled with huge potholes and water leaks due to the construction of the new Department of Education building.

There is also litter strewn along the road and illegal dumping in Jan Smuts Avenue.

Spokesman for Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, Simon April, said the complaint is noted and it would be forwarded to the relevant department.

However we plead with members of the community to raise service delivery issues or complaints through our customer care centre. These complaints can be traced and attended accordingly, – Simon April

The municipality’s customer care centre has proven fruitful as the report is also presented to the senior management and to the portfolio committee for oversight purposes. Complaints can be forwarded to service@hcm.gov.za or SMS 32061 or call 039 6882227.

(NOTE: One of the residents said that he had only approached the Herald because he had received no response to his written letters of complaint to the municipality.)
