Cross country champs in Scottburgh draws top athletes

The championships featured races from U8 competitors through to Masters athletes

Some of the best KZN runners came together for the recent Ugu Cross Country Championships in Scottburgh.

It was a great day for both local and visiting athletes to enjoy the trail and the area overall.

The championships featured races from U8 competitors through to Masters athletes, with clubs from across KZN delivering impressive performances across a range of distances.

In the 1km boys U8, Melokuhle Lembede of Umkomaas Athletic Club won in 4:56, while Sandy Chuma, also of Umkomaas Athletic Club, took the 1km girls U8 in 5:04.

Mbalehmle Malunga of Dumisa Development won the 2km boys U9 and U10 categories in 10:38, while Sisanda Shozi of Harding Athletic Club claimed the 2km girls U9 and U10 categories in 11:04.

Asembekele Khomo won the 3km boys U11 and U12 categories in 12:15, with Akhona Maphumulo taking the 3km girls U11 and U13 categories in 13:02.

Nkanyiso Vundla of Umkomaas Athletic Club won the 4km boys U13 and U15 categories in 15:20, while Okuhle Ngwane of Harding Athletic Club was victorious in the 4km girls U14 and U15 categories in 17:08.

In the 4km open men’s race, Lindokuhle Chuluza of Ethekwini Athletic Club was first to cross the finish line in 13:30.

Minenhle Shozi of Harding Athletic Club won the 4km open women’s category in 17:16, while teammate Asenathi Jali claimed the 4km youth women’s category in 16:00.

Thokomele Dlamini of Hollywood Athletic Club won the 4km masters women’s category in 21:33.

In the 6km youth men event, the title went to Luluhle Madikizela of Harding Athletic Club in 22:35.

Palisaheank Khwani of Umkomaas Athletic Club won the 6km junior women’s category in 34:10.

Jacob Ndwalane of Hollywood Athletic Club took the 6km Grand Masters men’s category in 34:15.

Siyabonga Hlope of Harding Athletic Club won the 8km junior men’s category in 29:20, while David Lamont of Yellowwood Park Athletic Club claimed the 8km Masters men’s category in 34:31.

Lindokuhle Chuluza also claimed the 10km open men’s category, finishing in 35:56.

In the shorter senior events, Minenhle Shozi of Harding Athletic Club won the 2km senior women’s category in 8:23, and Sabelo Hjunguza of Umzumbe Development took the 2km senior men’s title in 6:48.
