Update: Taxi driver sentenced for killing 15 passengers
Fourteen passengers died in the accident
GCINA Goodnough Langa (35) was recently sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court.
He was convicted on 15 counts of culpable homicide, as well as for overloading his taxi, and operating an unroadworthy vehicle.
Langa was arrested on November 22, 2013, after he lost control of his taxi which was carrying 18 passengers.
The vehicle ploughed through the entrance to Sappi and into a nearby flatbed truck, killing 14 passengers.
Another of the passengers died in hospital later that day.
Langa, who had suffered only small cut to his arm, was found to be over the legal limit for alcohol.
Paramedics and rescue workers said that they had never seen a more disturbing accident.
“Langa was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment for culpable homicide, 12 months’ for operating an unroadworthy vehicle and was cautioned and discharged for overloading,” said Scottburgh SAPS communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.
Langa’s driver’s licence was suspended for a period of 12 months.
