Pennington burglar arrested
The guard continued the pursuit when the suspects ran off , despite the possibility of being shot at.
PENNINGTON residents have an alert security guard to thank for the arrest of Nkululeko Mpungose, who was charged with the unlawful pointing of a firearm last week.
“When the security officer stopped two suspicious-looking men to question them, they ran off into nearby bushes,” said Scottburgh SAPS communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.
The security guard gave chase. As he approached the men, he noticed that one of them was carrying a firearm.
He continued the pursuit despite the possibility of being shot.
The search continued and the guard eventually found one of the suspects attempting to hide behind a tree at the entrance of Pennington Drive.
By this time, various policing units had been alerted and had responded.
“The guard apprehended the suspect and handed him over to Warrant Officer Brendon Rensburg of the Umzinto K9 unit,” said Captain Pandarum.
A shoulder bag, various branded takkies and a pair of scissors were seized from the man.
Scottburgh SAPS had received two reports of burglaries in the Pennington area and cases were registered for investigation.
“On the same day, a house in Shad Road was burgled. A pair of Adidas takkies, a Fossil wristwatch and a passport were among the items stolen,” said Captain Pandarum.
Later that day, an Umdoni Road resident arrived home and found that the lounge door had been forced open. Shoes, clothing and other property had been stolen.
“Mpungose (23), who had been arrested in the unlawful pointing of a firearm case, was linked to the two burglaries by the property that had been found in his possession and he was charged accordingly,” said Captain Pandarum.
Mpungose has appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court for all three cases.
The case was postponed and he will appear again on September 28 for a formal bail application.
The cases are being investigated by the Scottburgh Cluster Detective Task Team.
