WATCH: Banks count cost after armed robbery – with pics
Banks have been left with a hefty repair bill.
UPDATE September 29:
THE men wanted in connection with the robbery of two banks at the Scottburgh Mall yesterday morning are still on the loose.
It is believed that a total of R35 000 was taken from the two banks.
Premises at both banks were badly damaged in the blast and repairs could cost as much as R850 000.
The robbers gained access to the banks through the main doors.
A local security company was first to respond. Guards came under fire from the thieves who had set up ambush points.
Fortunately, no one was injured.
KZN Media Centre spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane, confirmed that charges of business robbery and armed robbery had been opened at Scottburgh police station.
UPDATE September 28:
THE SAPS and the Explosives Unit have cleared the scene at the Scottburgh Mall where an armed robbery took place during the early hours of this morning.
Spent cartridges have been collected and sent for ballistic analysis. Scottburgh Mall is open for business.
ORIGINAL STORY:
SPENT bullet cartridges now litter sections of the Scottburgh Mall, where a group of apparently highly trained and heavily armed robbers blasted their way into two bank safes during the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The suspects – thought to be a group of 10 – fled the scene following a shootout with police.
An undisclosed sum of money was stolen from Absa and FNB.
The robbers appeared to have been armed with R5s and AK47s and had set up ambush points in Margaret Avenue, behind the Scottburgh Mall, as well as in front of the Mid South Coast Mail offices.
The SAPS Explosives Unit are on scene, working alongside various other police units.
The road leading to Scottburgh Mall has been cordoned off while police investigate.
