ORIGINAL STORY: Beaches are not safe
BEACHGOERS are warned to take extra precautions when visiting the Widenham and Umkomaas beaches.
This after a spate of crime in the area, ranging from robbery to rape.
KwaZulu-Natal SAPS media centre communications officer, Captain Gwala confirmed that cases of rape, robbery and theft had been opened for investigation.
No arrests have been made as yet and the local community is growing concerned.
A couple was apparently parked on the beachfront at Widenhamin teh early hours of a recent Sunday morning when they were approached by four men.
They were forced out of the vehicle and chased onto the beach.
They were assaulted and robbed of their clothes and belongings. The criminals fled the scene after raping the woman at knife point.
“Both people were taken to hospital for treatment,” said Captain Gwala.
Earlier this month, the local Facebook crime group warned of two criminals, one usually armed with a broken bottle, the other with a screwdriver, who were on the prowl.
They are believed to be linked to four other muggings at the beaches.
Please report and ad all crime to the Umkomaas SAPS at 039 9736108 so that patrols in hot spots can be increased.
