Update: Another Widenham beach suspect in court
Excellent police work has resulted in two arrests.
SPHAMANDLA Ndelu (23), wanted in connection with the rape and robbery of a 21-year-old woman, was arrested recently.
The victim’s boyfriend was also robbed and assaulted during the attack at Widenham beachfront.
“Members of the team, Detective Captains Mark West and Sam Nyawose, Detective Warrant Officer Ndlovu and Detective Constables Cele and Mswoni of the Umkomaas SAPS Detective Service, as well as Constables Brandon Gates and Pagel Rajah of the Umzinto K9 Unit, worked around the clock to gather intelligence, profile the suspects and do everything else possible to identify, locate and arrest the alleged perpetrators,” said Scottburgh SAPS communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.
Ndelu appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court and was remanded in custody until his next appearance on October 6, when he will appear alongside his co-accused, Sthembiso Emmanuel Mbhele for a formal bail application hearing.
Further investigation has linked the accused to other robbery cases within the Umkomaas precincts.
Major-General Ndlovu congratulated the hard-working police officers who have successfully apprehended a second suspect.
“With only a description of the suspects provided by the victims to work on, the members worked tirelessly to gather intelligence and bring the accused before court. I am pleased with the arrests and investigations thus far and would like to see the courts mete out the harshest sentence possible should the accused be convicted of this horrific crime,” she said.
Two other assailants are still to be accounted for. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Umkomaas SAPS at 039-9736108.
