Teen’s rapist sentenced

The girl was walking home from school when she was attacked.

ZIZAMELE Phungula was recently sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of a 15-year-old girl.

He was also convicted of aggravated robbery, for which he received a 15-year sentence.

The sentences will run concurrently.

The victim, a grade 10 pupil, was walking home along the As-Salaam Road in Braemar in April last year, when Phungula approached her.

He threatened her with a dagger and dragged her into the nearby bush, where he raped her and robbed her of her money.

“ Sawoti SAPS detectives worked tirelessly to identify and arrest the man within days,” said Scottburgh SAPS communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

Ugu cluster commander, Major-General Sethenya Nxamagele, commended the Sawoti SAPS station commander, Captain Siva Pillay and his detectives for their fine work.

“We hope it will deter like-minded criminals from committing such horrific crimes,” said Maj-Gen Nxamagele.

The case was investigated by Detective Constable Nonhle Myende of the Sawoti SAPS Detective Service.
