Criminal sentenced to 40 years in jail
He fatally shot a man and sexually assaulted a woman.
THABANI Senzo Ntombela Luthuli (34) who was wanted for a murder committed in 2015, has been arrested.
He was finally caught after his photo appeared in the media. He was sentenced to a total of 40 years’ imprisonment by a Durban regional court last Monday after being arrested by South Coast police.
On April 7, 2015 Luthuli was at a tavern in Mfazazana, when he sexually assaulted a woman. An argument ensued and Luthuli shot and killed a friend of the woman’s who intervened.
The same bullet also struck another person in the arm.
Luthuli fled and police started a search. An identikit appeared in the media and, after receiving information, police arrested Luthuli near Umkomaas in June 2015.
He was found to be in possession of a firearm and ammunition. It was later established that it was the same firearm used in the murder.
He was charged by Captain Vasu Govender from Hibberdene Detectives with murder, attempted murder and sexual assault as well as for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlicensed ammunition.
It was also established that he was wanted by Verulam detectives for robbery and the theft of a motor vehicle, which took place in 2007. Luthuli was charged with those offences as well.
He was sentenced to 10 years for murder; two years for sexual assault; 13 years for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and 15 years for robbery and theft of motor vehicle. He was found not guilty on the charge of attempted murder.
