Filthy Connor Street a concern
The issue of litter and dumping has been an ongoing problem.
MARK Lawlor is tired of walking out of his place of business to be greeted by litter strewn along Connor Street in Port Shepstone.
To make matters worse, Mr Lawlor’s refuse has not been collected for some time and Settler’s Park, adjacent to his business, has turned into a dumping ground and a haven for criminals.

This problem has been going on for months, and Mr Lawlor said that the non-existent service from the municipality could be confirmed by a car guard, his staff, and by visiting the area.

I pay high refuse removal fees and I am tired of this unsightly mess. We have not seen a street sweeper for months, – Mark Lawlor
When the Herald visited last week, piles of rubbish and human faeces were seen in Settler’s Park, along with with overflowing rubbish bins and litter along the road.

“There is just no long-term solution put forward by the municipality. I have complained numerous times and met personally with Peppy Govender, who assured me that they would get to the root cause of the problem. Corrective action needs to be taken to prevent a recurrence,” said Mr Lawlor.
Ray Nkonyeni municipal spokesman, Simon April, said that it is important to indicate that they do have a litter picker working in the area on a daily basis and the complaint has been discussed. Mr April confirmed that the area was eventually cleaned on Monday this week.

Mr Lawlor said that the municipality had spent thousands to fence off the park to stop crime in the CBD, but had failed to lock the gate. This problem, coupled with the public toilets, serves as the perfect hiding spot for criminals. “Surely between the police and the municipality someone can put a lock on the gate,” he added.
