Electricity hike jolts resident

In one month the Mbango resident's electricity bill increased by R1 000.

TALK about a shock to the system!

Colin Wardell of Kvalsvig Road in Mbango is besides himself as his electricity bill has increased by more than a R1 000 in the last two months.

It jumped from R2 601 in December last year, remained relatively consistent until August 2016, when it increased to R3 600 and he then received an account for R3 320 in September.

Mr Wardell just can’t understand why it would have increased as nothing has changed at his place of residence.

After making some inquiries about his inflated bill, he was told to pay R337 to have his electricity meter tested, which he did. But since then, no one has come out to do the actually testing.

He said that he had even tried to phone the number on his electricity account, but that line was no longer working.

I discovered, after trying unsuccessfully for two days to make contact on all their lines 039 6882280, 2281, 2265, 2286/5, that none of them are working, so how are the consumers supposed to know this? – Colin Wardell

Mr Wardell then paid two lengthy visits to the relevant department last week, but nobody could explain or give him any clarity about the fee he had paid for the meter test and why he had not received the service.

He said that, since last week, he had been in contact with the electricity department again, just to be told once again – ‘that’s your reading’. “When I queried the meter testing that I had paid for, I had the phone put down on me.”

Simon April, spokesman for Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, said the information would be referred to the municipality’s electricity billing section and Mr Wardell would be contacted.
