Workers chase robbers off with spades
The time of day and the passing traffic did not deter the robbers.
A BAKKIE load of workers armed with spades chased off two knife-wielding robbers who were attacking a prominent Manaba woman whose car had broken down near Umhlanga last week.
The dramatic attack took place in broad daylight on an extremely busy highway at about 3pm.
The woman (who wished to remain anonymous) and her sister, both senior citizens, were travelling south on the N2 when the car overheated and smoke started billowing out from under the bonnet. She pulled over and the engine cut out.
“I put on my hazard lights and opened the bonnet, hoping that someone would stop to help. Traffic was thundering past us and it really was scary. Both my sister and I began to phone for help. Somehow I eventually ended up outside with the car with both phones,” she said.
Out of the corner of her eye, the South Coast woman noticed a man wearing a red ‘hoodie’ negotiating the stream of heavy traffic to cross the road.
In what seemed like a second, he was suddenly approaching the car with another man and she knew they were in danger.
While her sister was still struggling to get out of the car, the men assaulted the Manaba woman, pulling at her clothing, trying to grab the cellphones and stab her with a large kitchen knife. Realising she would not be very visible from the road, she moved away from her assailants to the side of the car closest to the road, screaming loudly in an attempt to alert passers-by of her plight.
The men had just managed to push her over and had grabbed both cellphones when the driver of a passing bakkie pulled up.
Fortunately, he was transporting a number of labourers on the back. Armed with spades and other implements, they came to her aid.
A young woman also pulled over and joined the rescue party. The robbers fled.
“The bakkie driver and his staff were wonderful and the young woman was so incredibly kind.”
They found out afterwards that there had been numerous other attacks in the same area during the week.
