Ugu admits to having problems

Plans were put in the pipeline to rectify these.

AGEING infrastructure and cable theft caused major setbacks in water supply, said Paul Watson of Ugu.

Reporting back to Ray Nkonyeni Municipality council last  week, Mr Watson said cable thieves were not only stealing cables but robbing people of a basic need.

During his presentation he said that, although they were aware that some water infrastructure was as old as he was, plans to replace the infrastructure were in the pipeline.

“Infrastructure replacement funding received was spread across all four municipalities,” he said.

He admitted to shortfalls with water supply but said Ugu was working tirelessly to rectify these.

Gamalakhe, Murchison and Oslo Beach were among areas said to have been badly hit by a dry spell. However plans for relief were being implemented to ensure water supply during the festive season runs smoothly.

“We are still in drought. The Mzimkhulu river is still not back to normal; please use water wisely,” said Mr Watson.

He added that the berm system was still functioning despite some parts being washed away by heavy rains.

“We use our internal resources to manage the influx of high water volumes in order to avoid salt water problems.”

Although some residents are still experiencing water problems, it might ease worry a little to know that no further shutdowns are expected to happen at the Bhobhoyi plant.

Murchison Hospital was not off the hook, though, as Mr Watson claimed their water consumption was too high. He said they were in talks with hospital management to lower its water usage in order to avoid outages in the area.
