Don’t toss it, recycle it

Pupils were encouraged to 'think green'.

NONTSHINTSHA Primary proved to be tops when it comes to ‘reducing, re-using and recycling’, walking off with top honours in the waste hierachy implementation and tonnage category at the recent Environmental Waste Education competition.

The school collected an impressive 8.6 tons of waste during 2016.

The competition was hosted in the Margate community hall by Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s waste department last Thursday.

The ‘green’ mantra of ‘reduce, re-use, recycle’ was the theme of the day and schools had to prove they had a sound knowledge of waste disposal principals.

There were different categories, including drama, art and music, waste management implementation and tonnage.

All the schools showed commitment to environmental responsibility and a good ecological awareness.

Samkelisiwe Ngcobo of Betania said the aim was to curb waste by making use of reusable materials, thereby limiting the use of landfills.

She and her team used plastics to make clothing, and provided edutainment through a fashion show which captivated the audience.
