It’s all systems go for SALGA games

The countdown to the long-awaited sports event has begun.

SPORTING champions, get ready for the 2016 South African Local Government Association (SALGA) games.

Ugu District municipality says it’s all systems go for the 18th games.

The event was  launched at Desroches Hotel in Margate last Friday, and will take place from Friday, December 8 to Monday, December 12 at Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre.

Other venues will include the Marburg Sports Grounds, Margate Country Club and Uvongo Town Hall.

The launch was attended by provincial SALGA chairman, Councillor Mluleki Ndobe, as well as mayors and members of sports federations, amongst others.

Fixtures for all sporting codes were drawn in a live draw. Some 11 districts from around KwaZulu-Natal will be competing for the number one spot in 16 different sporting codes.

Sport codes include athletics, basketball, boxing, cricket, soccer, golf, karate, rugby and swimming.

During the launch, Ugu deputy mayor Councillor Mondli Chiliza assured those attending that the municipality was more than ready to host the event.

He said it was a privilege to host the games as they promote sports development in local government.

“Communities must support these games, not only do they benefit young sportsmen and women, they also boost the economy of our district.”

According to Ugu, plans are in place to ensure that water supply interruptions are kept to a minimum.

A team of technicians will be on standby to deal with any interruptions that may occur.
