Newsflash: Police foil ATM robbery

Shots were fired by both the suspects and the police.

POLICE have arrested a man and are searching for others linked to a foiled ATM robbery  at Sipofu near Hibberdene in the early hours of this morning.

At about 1.30am two officers from the Hibberdene police station were on the R102 Sipofu Road when they received news of an alarm which had been activated at an ATM nearby.

“When they arrived, they saw three vehicles leaving. They requested backup,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

Officers from the Port Shepstone Tactical Response Team who were in the area followed one of the vehicles onto the N2 freeway northbound.

“Once the driver of the vehicle saw that he was being followed, shots were fired at the police.  The police returned fire and forced the while LDV to stop,” she added.

Some suspects fled on foot, but one was apprehended and arrested. A Z88 pistol, balaclavas, angle grinders and gloves were found in the vehicle.  No one was injured during the shootout.

“Due to the quick response of both the Hibberdene police and TRT officers, the suspects abandoned their plans to cut open the ATM and tried to evade the police. The suspect could face charges of attempted business robbery and attempted murder,” said Lt-Col Wiid.
