Be wary of criminals during the festive season
Plans to ensure full law enforcement and beach patrols over the festive season are in the pipeline.
CRIMINALS are most likely to target areas with no surveillance cameras.
This is according to Ray Nkonyeni Municipality‘s community services head of department, Sbusiso Nzimande, who was speaking at a council meeting on Tuesday this week.
This, after council raised concerns about the ongoing crime spree in both the Margate and Port Shepstone CBDs.
Councillors described this as a major concern which needed urgent attention ahead of the upcoming festive season.
They asked for law enforcement officers to be visible at beaches and in towns over the season.
Mr Nzimande assured council that plans to facilitate law enforcement, including overtime around beaches, were in the pipeline.
However he raised concerns over the number of people who flock to beaches during this time of year and cautioned beachgoers to be wary of criminals.
“It’s a major challenge, and we are appealing to all beachgoers to be vigilant and assist us in ensuring beaches and CBDs are crime free.”
Municipal manager, Max Mbili added that it was not only the duty of the municipality to provide law enforcement but the SAPS needed to come on board as well.
Other issues raised by councillors included:
* Verge maintenance .
* The Gamalakhe swimming pool which has been out of order for some time.
* Beach ablution facilities which should be open until lifeguards are off duty.
