PUBLIC toilets (or the lack thereof) in Port Shepstone have long been a concern.

Although there are facilities at Chris Hani Square, Colley Street and the taxi rank, they were in a shocking state: the stench was unbearable, and toilet seats and wash basins had been broken or removed. These toilets have had a makeover, and are now open, following a major refurbishment organised by the Port Shepstone Business Forum.

These ablutions have been upgraded with new lavatories, flooring, paintwork and changing facilities. Work had also been done on the building with new roofing provided by Niccill Construction.

These facilities will be maintained by the informal traders as a result of a new partnership arrangement with the municipality. It will cost just R2 to make use of the toilets.

Ronnie Nair, deputy mayor of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality praised the upgrade of the toilets which, he said, was completed quickly and to a very high standard.

“They now look fresh and modern. We at council are delighted to be working with the Port Shepstone Business Forum and the informal traders to ensure that the toilets are kept clean and tidy. These toilets are now fit for use and an asset to our town and its people,” he said.

He added that the municipality is proud to have formed this partnership with the Port Shepstone Business Forum while also working for a better Port Shepstone for all.

In excess of R100 000 had been spent on the upgrade.

Since the refurbishment eight jobs have been created. There will be security at all three ablutions to void vandalism. Spokesman for the informal traders, Sibongiseni Dlamini, thanked the municipality and the business forum for the upgrade. The toilets are open from 7am to 5pm.

In the near future both the municipality and the business forum are looking at installing a ‘park home’ ablution facility which will cater for  pensioners outside the Port Shepstone Civic Centre.
