According to the department’s communications director, Kiru Naidoo, with a track record of just under 30 000 houses a year, KwaZulu-Natal is way ahead of the other eight provinces, including the Western Cape and Gauteng .

“What makes this service delivery achievement more compelling is that KZN does the job with a smaller budget than many of its counterparts.”

MEC Ravi Pillay pointed out that his department routinely spends its full budget and also receives funds from unspent budgets in other provinces.

“If there were more funds KZN would be able to build more houses,” he added.

The MEC also stressed that the department’s work was more than just building houses.

“We’re changing our people’s lives with quality human settlements that allow our citizens to live, work, play and pray in a secure environment.”
