UGU District is extremely proud to announce that Olwandle High School from Gamalakhe scooped the top prize out of all other districts and is the recipient of a state-of-the-art science and maths laboratory to the value of R1.2 million.
The Moses Kotane Institute (MKI), an entity of EDTEA and in partnership with Ishashalazi Investments recently hosted a competition called, ‘I am an engineer’. This was a pilot project comprising four randomly selected districts namely, Ugu, Uthukela, Umlazi, Umkhanyakude.
The competition was aimed at igniting the interest and inspiring pupils in science, technology and related fields.
The intention was to also create a dialogue between learning institutions and rural high schools in understanding where the shortfalls are regarding maths, science and technology. The proposed task for the competition was for pupils to design a sustainable, eco-friendly house and to create a model for the design.
Groups of pupils from selected schools had to make their presentations to a panel of judges from the Architectural Department of the Durban University of Technology at different venues and the top three or four from each district then attended the overall winners awards function in Isipingo on November 28. Schools representing Ugu District were Olwandle High, Port Shepstone Secondary, Roseville Secondary and Sister Joan’s High.
