THREE men were sentenced for robbery in the Port Shepstone Magistrates’ Court last Tuesday.
Desmond Pillay (33) was sentenced to eight years for robbery with aggravating circumstances, Dirk Johannes van Niekerk (41) was sentenced to 12 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances and Musa Samkelo Ngcobo (29) was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
On the evening of Monday July 28, 2014, a 63-year-old woman was at her Oslo Beach home when a man grabbed her from behind and ordered her not to scream or he would shoot her.
While this was unfolding, the victim’s friend arrived, saw what was happening and screamed for help.
The man fled with the woman’s bag, which contained a cellphone, a large sum of cash and a firearm.
A security officer in the area saw the man jumping over the wall and arrested him.
The investigation, led by Warrant Officer Lami Mjweni, resulted in the arrest of an additional two men and the stolen items being recovered.
