In commemoration of Women’s Month, Umkomaas Saps Social Crime Prevention Unit spearheaded a successful joint gender-based violence (GBV) awareness convoy and community outreach campaign last Wednesday.

The multi-stakeholder initiative targeted key areas from the Roseneath CBD to the Umkomaas CBD, concluding with a school donation in the area.

The convoy united police members, local security firms and business partners. The campaign focused on high-visibility awareness across the local CBDs.

Officers and stakeholders engaged directly with women of all ages to highlight the critical importance of reporting GBV crimes immediately; the breakdown of silence surrounding domestic and gender-based abuse; available police support pathways and specialised care resources for victims.

After the street awareness campaign, the convoy proceeded to KwaGumbi Primary for a special outreach segment.

Umkomaas Saps’ first woman station commander, Colonel Samkelisiwe Favourite Mncwango, handed over sanitary pads to the school girls.

The donation was fully funded through voluntary personal contributions by station members. School management and learners expressed gratitude for the much-needed support.

The day concluded with an appreciation lunch, honouring the dedicated women of the station and their female security partners for their ongoing service to the community.

The success of the operation was made possible through the joint efforts of Umkomaas Saps Management and Social Crime Prevention Unit, Umkomaas Saps Human Resources and Finance Departments, Umkomaas Saps Female Detective Services, local private security companies, Umkomaas Community Police Forum and its spiritual crime prevention, and AA Spice (local business partner).
