ASSAULTED in the process of booking a suspect who was taken into custody on Sunday evening, December 11, a Scottburgh SAPS constable sustained multiple injuries when his prisoner became ‘extremely’ violent.
Needless to say, on top of having already been charged with housebreaking and theft, the assailant now faces a further charge of assault with the intent of inflicting grievous bodily harm.
“The 22-year-old suspect became extremely violent and head-butted the policeman,” said Scottburgh SAPS communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum, explaining that the police officer had sustained a fractured nose, swelling to his forehead and various abrasions.
The officer wrestled with the suspect, the duo falling to the floor with the unruly prisoner lashing out and kicking at the policeman.
The officer’s colleagues finally heard the commotion and came to his assistance. The suspect was later restrained and the police officer taken to hospital for medical care.
“The suspect had been arrested for the burglary in September this year at a local old age home, where the window had been forced open to gain entry and remove computer equipment and money,” said Captain Pandarum.
