UPDATE: Off-duty cop assaulted – man arrested

The policeman is still in hospital.

POLICE have arrested a 36-year-old man from Gamalakhe.

The suspect  was arrested on Tuesday this week and appeared in the Ramsgate Court yesterday (Wednesday).

The case was postponed for further investigation.

POLICE are searching for a group of men who assaulted an off-duty policeman in Gamalakhe in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“Constable Manqoba Zulu (30), stationed at Margate SAPS was at a tavern when an argument broke out between him and a group of men,” said police spokesman, Captain Gerald Mfeka.

“Constable Zulu was attacked and severely beaten. He suffered serious head injuries.”

He was taken to the Gamalakhe clinic before being transferred to Netcare Margate Hospital and later to a Durban hospital.

Yesterday Cst Zulu was said to be in a very serious condition.

Margate police are investigating a case of attempted murder. No arrests have yet been made.
