Warning: Beware of bogus police phone calls
Bail for a person in custody can only be paid at the police station or at court.
POLICE have issued a warning about scamsters who target people via telephone, calling and claiming to be police officers investigating ‘cases’ for which their family or friends have apparently been ‘arrested’.
Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said the bogus police caller informs the victim that his or her friend or family member can be bailed if money is paid into a specified bank account.
“Bail for a person in custody can only be paid at the police station or at court, for which a receipt will be issued,” she said.
If you receive such a call, you are asked to report this to your nearest police station and NOT to pay over any money.
