Umzumbe speaker in alleged murder scandal
The speaker has denied knowing the accused but has not denied being at the scene.
UMZUMBE municipality has denied claims that council speaker Matho Shozi’s bodyguard was involved in a shootout which left one person dead in Sandton recently.
They have also refuted a statement made under oath by the man accused of pulling the trigger, about being an employee of the municipality.
Sibusiso Patrick Khumalo, who claimed in court that he was Shozi’s bodyguard, is said to have produced a gun and shot dead Tshepo Mabusela (30) and injured Thapelo Mariki (35), after an argument broke out at a pizza outlet in Rivonia.
According to reports Ms Shozi remained in the car with another woman during the incident.
The group, including Ms Shozi, had gone to the ANC January 8 statement at Orlando Stadium and were allegedly intoxicated at the time.
According to CCTV footage obtained by police, after the shooting, the pair (Khumalo and his accomplice) fled the scene, goining off in different directions.
The four, including Ms Shozi, were arrested later in Alexandra but three were later released without being charged.
Khumalo was charged with murder and attempted murder but was released by Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on R2 000 bail on Tuesday morning this week.
According to reports, his affidavit said he was a driver and a bodyguard to the speaker of Umzumbe Municipality from August 2016 to date and that he was earning a salary of R22 000 per month.
Despite this, the municipality says it has no record of his employment and directed all queries to the speaker.
When Ms Shozi was contacted by the Herald, she did not deny her involvement in the shooting but said she did not know the man who pulled the trigger, nor was he her bodyguard.
