Crackdown targets criminals
Three men were arrested for being in possession of unlicenced firearms and eight men for being under the influence of alcohol.
A TWO day operation kept criminals on their toes and arrests were made in drug related cases, rape cases, burglary, theft, attempted murder, assault and malicious damage to property.
The operation, which took place on Friday and Saturday last week, was carried out by police detectives and uniformed officers in the Ugu cluster.
They were assisted by the SAPS Airwing, Public Order Police, Tactical Response Team, reservists, Road Traffic Inspectorate, Home Affairs and Ray Nkonyeni Law Enforcement.
The operation resulted in:
* Five illegal immigrants being arrested and eight people charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.
* A woman was arrested for being in possession of 45 parcels of dagga weighing 398 grams with a street value of R600 in the Hibberdene area.
* Police confiscated three firearms and arrested three men:
1. A man (23) was arrested in Port Shepstone CBD with a homemade firearm on Friday.
2. A man (28) was arrested on Saturday on the Dududu road near Scottburgh, carrying a pistol and an empty magazine.
3. A man (44) was arrested by police in Wosiyana Ward, in Ezinqoleni on Monday this week. He was in possession of an unlicensed firearm, a 7.65 mm pistol and three rounds of ammunition.
Other items which were confiscated were clothing, a toolbox, a dash mounted blue light, liquor, knives and a panga.
Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid, said the operations bore fruit as a significant reduction in serious crimes were experienced in the cluster.
