Peggy Nkonyeni likely to be chosen as next Ugu mayor

A new mayor for Ugu municipality is expected to be sworn in at the next council.

THE vacancy for Ugu’s mayor has officially been announced.

Last Thursday, during Ugu’s council meeting held at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre, municipal manager DD Naidoo formally announced that the position of Ugu mayor may now be filled.

DD said it was up to the ANC to choose a suitable candidate to replace mayor, Tolomane Mnyayiza who died late last year, after a brave fight against illness.

He said however, they were currently waiting for the Independent Electoral Commission to finalise all processes before a new mayor could be announced.

Two weeks ago, the Herald reported that there were three names currently on the list – former education MEC Peggy Nkonyeni, speaker Ntombifikile Gumede, and deputy mayor Mondli Chiliza.

According to a source within the party, Peggy Nkonyeni is likely to be the new mayor of Ugu.

“If Ms Nkonyeni is elected as mayor, she will be sworn in the next council meeting.”
