Woman robbed at knifepoint while waiting for taxi at Park Rynie

WANDILE Shaun Khawula, the man who robbed a woman at knifepoint while she was waiting for a taxi near the N2 freeway off-ramp in Park Rynie in May 2016 was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment recently by the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court.
“Without warning, Khawula grabbed her handbag containing her cellphone, money and various cards,” said Scottburgh SAPS communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.
Desperately hanging onto her bag and screaming for someone to come to her aid, the woman was forced to let go of her bag when Khawula produced an okapi knife.

Khawula fled into nearby bushes, without realising that, not only had he been seen committing the robbery, but his luck was about to run out as well.
Road Traffic Inspectorate officer, Ramlall Brijlall spotted the fleeing suspect and immediately alerted his colleague, officer Tim Simpson.
Both officers responded immediately and, after receiving a detailed description of Khawula, managed to track him down to the industrial area in Park Rynie, where he was subsequently arrested.
He was found in possession of the knife he had used to threaten the woman, as well as two cellphones and cash.

The woman later identified Khawula as the robber.
“The case was investigated by Detective Constable Dillon Khamisa of the Scottburgh SAPS Detective Service,” said Captain Pandarum.
Detective Constable Khamisa successfully opposed the bail application brought by Khawula, which ensured that he remained in custody until the time of his conviction and sentencing.
Welcoming the arrest, Ugu Cluster Commander, Major General Agnes Nxamagele said: “I wish to express my thanks and appreciation to RTI officers Tim Simpson and Ramlall Brijlall for their swift response and the arrest of the perpetrator.”
Major General Nxamagele also commended Detective Constable Khamisa for the thorough investigation.
