Brazen thieves target car carrier on N2 near Harding
The estimated value of the vehicles taken from the car carrier is about R2-million.
A NEW hot spot for muggings and hijackings has been identified.
Harding police are investigating two separate cases of armed robberies which occurred on the N2 on Tuesday this week. Police are now investigating whether the criminals are working together, targeting motorists and truck drivers.

In a daring robbery, the driver of a car carrier, who was waiting for a mechanic on the N2 in Harding after a mechanical fault on the truck, was approached by five men at about 11.30pm. “The men drove an Audi and parked next to the truck transporting new vehicles,” said police spokesman, Captain Gerald Mfeka.
“They held the driver at gunpoint and demanded that he offload the vehicles he was transporting to the Eastern Cape,” he said. Four brand new vehicles, a Toyota Quantum, Toyota Fortuner and two Toyota bakkies estimated to be valued at around R2-million were removed from the carrier and taken.
Captain Mfeka added that the thieves had planned their robbery, as they had carried enough fuel to fill in the new vehicles. Police are investigating and no arrests have been made.

In another armed robbery on Tuesday night a 45-year-old taxi driver was stopped on the N2 in Harding by four men who were driving a white Toyota sedan. Two men approached the driver and demanded at gunpoint that he get out. A shot was fired as the driver was fleeing but he was not injured.
“His cellphone was taken during the robbery and much later police arrested the four men when they spotted the stolen taxi,” said Captain Mfeka. The driver’s cellphone and vehicle were recovered.
