UGU Cluster Commander Major General Sethenya Nxamangele is serious about fighting crime within the cluster. Last Friday she, together with Ugu senior officers, Crime Intelligence officers and various other SAPS units conducted stop and search operations at Gamalakhe.
Police searched for drugs, wanted suspects and unlicensed shebeens.

Following up on investigations, police immediately reacted and went to a house and some of the local taverns and shebeens in the area. A 21-year-old was arrested for possession of 10 Ecstasy tablets. A 24-year-old man was arrested at his home for possession of four Mandrax tablets and 148 heroin capsules. Another 26-year-old was arrested at a tavern for possession of 39 Ecstasy tablets and dagga weighing 88 grams.
Several others were arrested for possession of dagga.
Two suspects were arrested for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, another two for common assault and one suspect for selling liquor without a licence.
Police also recovered R16 490 cash found from the arrested suspects. “All suspects were arrested and charged accordingly and appeared at the Ramsgate Court on Monday this week. The cases were postponed for further investigation,” said police spokesman, Captain Gerald Mfeka.
Major General Nxamangele praised the officers for a job well done and said the police would continue fighting drug-related crimes in the Ugu Cluster. She called on the community to get involved in exposing drug dealers by supplying information to the police. She confirmed that follow-up operations would be held on an ongoing basis.
