TWO years have passed since Zongenzani Sixtus Nyuswa murdered his former girlfriend’s boyfriend in a jealous fit of rage in the Mgangeni area of Sawoti.
Nyuswa’s ex-girlfriend, Nokulunga Mthembu, had, out of fear for her well-being, obtained a domestic violence protection order against her former boyfriend, but that did not stop him from going to her house and assaulting her during the evening hours of October 25, 2015.
“He assaulted her and she ran for help to a nearby house,” said Scottburgh SAPS communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

Her then boyfriend, Siyabonga Khawula, came to her rescue but, despite his efforts, was overpowered by Nyuswa, who attacked him and struck him on the head with a bush knife – killing him. Khawula was certified dead at the scene by paramedics.
A string of court appearances followed the murder and violation of the protection order by Nyuswa, who again appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on May 18.
Nyuswa was sentenced to a period of 12 years’ imprisonment on one count and a further sentence of life imprisonment for the murder of Khawula.
“The case was investigated by Detective Warrant Officer Bheko Ngcece of the Sawoti SAPS Detective Service,” said Cpt Pandarum.

She was quoted as saying: “I am pleased with the sentence and hope this sends a strong message to other people who are thinking of settling disputes by resorting to violence. It will also make others aware that the violation of a protection order is deemed very serious and carries a harsh penalty.”
