Hibberdene Happenings: Sadness prevails in Hibberdene

Don’t forget the craft/flea market at Koelwaters in Mtwalume on Saturday, July 1.

HIBBERDENE was rocked by yet more deaths last week, with Dick Coetzee and Basil Vorkel both losing their battles with ill-health on Wednesday. Dick had not lived in Hibberdene for many years, but was a popular resident of the River Resort and will be sadly missed.

After visiting his children in Canada a few months ago, he became seriously ill and underwent successful heart surgery in a Durban hospital, from which he appeared to have recovered well.

Dick will be remembered at a service to be held at Hibberdene Methodist Church this Thursday, June 22nd at 11am. Condolences go to his wife, Nan and all family members. Basil Vorkel was something of a legend in Hibberdene, having been an angler of note and chairman of the local fishing club for many years.

He had not been well for a few months and had spent the last few weeks of his life as a patient in Netcare Margate Hospital, ironically being discharged just the day before his death. Deepest sympathy is extended to his wife Jenny, his family and many friends. A well-attended service for Basil was held at the Methodist Church on Monday this week.

Further condolences

Thoughts are also with Joan and Louis Nortje on the death of Joan’s sister-in-law Lorraine Bowes, after a long battle with cancer, and Karen and Tony Leite after the death of Tony’s mom, aged 91, in Gauteng.

Still time

At the time of writing this column, 24 teenagers had put their names forward to attend the Methodist Church Winter Camp at Marina Beach.

R450 will provide five days of good fun, tasty food and meaningful Christian instruction, with the camp taking place from Saturday 1st, to Wednesday, July 5th.

Any last-minute would-be campers or anyone willing to partially or fully sponsor a child may contact Ken Walker at 082 3790656.

Special thanks

Thanks to all those who donated clothing, money or food to the Knysna fire victims and to Port Shepstone Lions and others who coordinated the relief programme – may you all be truly blessed.
