If you own a firearm, you need to read this

Gun owners have been given a reprieve.

THE Gauteng High Court in Pretoria ruled that gun owners are not obliged to renew expired, or close to expiring firearm licenses.

This according to a report published recently in the Daily News, which added the ruling followed Judge Ronel Tolmay saying the system was ‘clearly chaotic’ and calling it ‘dysfunctional’.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) received the High Court’s judgement yesterday and, the report goes on to say,  KwaZulu-Natal’s SAPS spokesman, Major Thulani Zwane has said the SAPS is studying the judgement. It has 15 court days within which to do so.

“In the meantime the SAPS will retain all firearms surrendered to the police by people that have failed to renew their licenses in accordance with the Firearms Control Act.

“Furthermore, no prosecutions will be instituted against those concerned and none of those firearms will be destroyed during this period,” said Major Zwane.
